The moment has finally arrived. I Cherlnell Lane, The Poetic Storyteller, am officially inviting you to The Poetic Storyteller's Speakeasy! Taking place October 11, 2024, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. This is one of the only fully accessible open mics on the Southside of Chicago. That means accessible doors, bathrooms, performance area, the whole nine yards! There's even a sign language interpreter. 

The Speakeasy is for all artists, singers, dancers, rappers, poets, or storytellers. Whatever your artistry you can come and perform at The Poetic Storyteller's Speakeasy. Or just come enjoy the performances. The best part is, it's free! 

This has been a long time in the making and I am so happy that it has finally arrived. Please, come and join the celebration with me. 

(This is an outdoor space however, bathrooms are located inside. So, please cozy up with a coat, throw, or light blanket but not too much because the performances are going to be hot!)

Word Dey! is a performance of original stories, poetry, spoken word, and personal narratives from the community reflecting how language shapes identity and inspires creativity.

Fehinty African Theatre Ensemble, Arts + Public Life inaugural Theater Company-in-Residence, is led by Artistic Director Olateju S. Adesida, and believes that performance illuminates many trajectories and common humanity. Their mission is to stage creative works from Africa and its diaspora through a process that actively engages African communities, facilitates the development of emerging artists and fosters dialogue and creative exchanges. Fehinty grew out of a community that wanted to tell stories that represented them in a new world. While African plays were not an anomaly in the early 2000s in Chicago, what there was did not reach or connect with the African immigrant community. As much as there are plays/stories that are culturally representative, it is as paramount that African Diasporans also be the tellers of those stories. Fehinty is a platform for the development of emerging African writers, directors, actors, and designers in diaspora and provide space and support for their work.

The men that usually meet at this time for our men's wellness circles #MANifestWellnessSundays are graciously giving up our session to invite these brilliant women to share with us, and everyone, insights into their lives and work. We have asked them to help us shape the conversations we have in our male-only spaces, to help us become better men, partners, husbands, and fathers.

Men will not be allowed to speak the entire session. This will not be a dialogue between men and women. There may be an opportunity to submit written questions from men in attendance.

Description

Unhealthy Relationships (both romantic and platonic) are happening to our girls at younger and younger ages. They are entering into these relationships at an alarming rate. Girls and young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence — almost triple the national average. Unhealthy behavior typically begins between the ages of 12 and 18. Cherlnell Lane, LLC has created this summit as an educational experience for girls in 5th to 8th grade. Where they will learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. The ladies will learn ways to prevent entering into an unhealthy relationship. They will learn they have a voice and how to use it. So, if placed in that situation they can speak up for themselves. Then last but not least the princesses will learn through self-esteem and self- love activities they are Queens in training and therefore required to be treated in a certain way. That doesn't include being in an unhealthy relationship.

Continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

We will also have a surprise for the girls.

In order to make the young ladies comfortable, there will be no parents allowed.

Join us for a workshop geared towards disabled survivors of sexual trauma and abuse. "Writing Through Sexual Trauma for Disabled Survivors" is meant to be a healing and safer space to explore, share, and process our emotions and experiences as they relate to sexual trauma and abuse. Through using and practicing the written word together, we will learn how writing and other activities can help us reveal, deal, and heal, individually and collectively from the trauma of abuse.

Cherlnell Lane is an author, poet, speaker, and teacher who bares her soul to heal others. Cherlnell uses her words to create incredible worlds and stories that, change the minds of those around her. Dealing with topics most people won’t dare mention. Cherlnell uses her life experiences; to reach people with her blog, inspire people with her written work, and teach people with her curriculum.

There will be a healing/self-care/sensory break space available as well as an emotional support person available to listen if you need to take space away from the group.

Cherlnell Lane, poet, author, and creator of Writing Through It Workshops, newest project, Healing Through It Summit is an all-day retreat for black women who have experienced any type of Trauma. If you have survived abusive relationships, sexual assault, childhood abuse, or other traumatic situations and are ready to heal then this summit is for you. Come to be guided by other black women on using your black girl magic to realize the queen you truly are. We will show you different ways to reveal, deal, and heal from negative emotions and how to commemorate and celebrate the positive ones. This event will take place on February 23, 2019, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm at Arts and Public Life, 301 E. Garfield Boulevard. The day consists of writing, painting, yoga, and meditation workshops as well as small massage therapy sessions. Breakfast and lunch are included. Dress comfortably and don't worry about needing anything but yourself.

The price is $50. The location is wheelchair accessible and there will be a mental health support person on hand.

This FREE workshop, “Raising Our Voices: Writing Through Sexual
Abuse”(ROV) will show you how writing (even if no one else reads it) is a very accessible way to foster healing. “Raising Our Voices” is a one day, three-hour workshop for adults who are survivors of sexual assault. Learn how to use the art of journaling, poetry, and other writing techniques to not only promote healing but growth. Tell your story using your own voice.

Be prepared to interact with other survivors, participate in
engaging activities, and share some of your writing with the
group. Journals will be provided and pens and pencils in a
rainbow of colors will be available for during the workshop.
